Metalcore heavyweights As I Lay Dying are celebrating ten years together so we had a few words with Jordan from the band about the past, the present and whether they got any shit for covering a Slayer track!
Planet Loud – So, how are things at the moment
As I Lay Dying – Things are going really well. The Decade of Destruction tour is underway. The first couple of shows have been great and we are looking forward to the rest!
Planet Loud – Congratulations on the milestone, how will you be celebrating?
As I Lay Dying – Thank you. The celebration is this tour we are on right now and the release of Decas. Both are something special for us and our fans. Other than that, I think we are just celebrating internally, that is being stoked we made a full ten years as a band.
Planet Loud – A lot has happened/changed to the music industry over 10 years, do you think it is now a better or worse place for a band like AILD?
As I Lay Dying – It’s not better or worse, it’s just different. Yeah, people don’t sell as many records as they used to because of downloading, etc, but now bands have so many social media outlets to get their music out there to the masses that wasn’t there when we first started. The industry will always be changing, which is why we as a band do our best to adapt, understand, and be a part of that change and surround ourself with folks that do the same.
Planet Loud – What has been the highlight of the last 10 years for you?
As I Lay Dying – That’s a tough one, since there are so many great things that have happened over the years. I would say some of the greatest moments have always been on tour, whether it’s playing bands that I grew listening to or just getting to hang out and get to know other bands.
Planet Loud – Any particular low points?
As I Lay Dying – For me, any time I get on a plane is a low point… haha. I hate flying, but hey, it’s part of the gig I guess. I just hate being confined in any sort of craft for long periods of time.
Planet Loud – How do you feel you have changed / developed as a band over the ten years?
As I Lay Dying – We’ve all changed quite a bit as individuals, which has resulted lots of changes to the band. We always do our best to improve upon who we are as people and musicians. I think it’s easy to hear that development when you go through our records back to back.
Planet Loud – You put out a compilation album recently featuring new tracks, remixes and covers. How did you decide on the track listing?
As I Lay Dying – First off we wanted to separate the originals, covers, and remixes from each other so everyone understood the distinction. Wanted to make sure our fans knew that the covers and remixes were not a new direction for a band, and that they were just something special for this release. After that, we just tried to make the songs flow well from one to the next.
Planet Loud – Interesting for a band like AILD to cover Slayer and Judas Priest tracks. Any backlash from religious sections because of your choice of cover?
As I Lay Dying – We’ve gotten a comment here or there, but nothing major. We did those covers to show our appreciation to some of our influences, and that’s the extent of it.
Planet Loud -Big question, any news on a new album?
As I Lay Dying – Yes! We are talking to a few producers right now and are working on scheduling studio time for Spring 2012. We hope to have it out around late summer early fall.
Planet Loud – What are your plans for 2012?
As I Lay Dying – Well, after we write and record the new record, we will embark on a Euro Festival tour as well as a tour in the states. We can’t say what tour it is yet, but I know we are excited about it and I know our fans will be too. It’s been a long time coming!
Planet Loud – Thanks for your time, anything else you want to say to finish off?
As I Lay Dying – I think you covered it all. Thanks you!
