Beneath The Massacre
Incogruous
Prosthetic Records
Pacey, raw and breath-takingly heavy, Beneath The Massacre’s third outing, ‘Incongruous’, is the sound of rage being vented in its purest form.
A cross between Between The Buried And Me, labelmates Through The Eyes Of The Dead and Cannibal Corpse at full tilt, there are no twists and turns on offer here and, as a result, the band have unleashed a ferocious soundtrack for a society currently riddled with seething discontent and despair. One of the major changes in Beneath The Massacre circa 2012 is how they’ve placed more focus on Christopher Bradley’s guitar work, which switches from winding technicality to crunching riffing in the blink of an eye – the band’s previous tendency to allow Justin Rouselle’s indescribably brilliant drumming hog the limelight having seemingly dissipated. This results in a more fluid overall sound and culminates in such excellent tracks as the supremely heavy ‘Pedestal’ and album closer, ‘Unheard’. The only negative – which is, unfortunately, a significant one – is that the band very rarely stray from their comfort zone, the pace seldom dropping below 100mph. It will be interesting to see how, or indeed if, they will progress on their next album because blistering freneticism will only take them so far. Some will interpret it as consistency, but the band’s detractors will point out that it becomes monotonous and, frankly, more than a little tiresome.
This shouldn’t distract you from the fact that this is a solid, powerful album full of intent and it’s one that firmly nails the band’s colours to the mast.
