Blaspherian – Infernal Warriors = rubbish death metal?

Infernal Warriors Of Death
Deathgasm

The best thing about seriously heavy death metal is the opportunity to sing just about anything and get away with it. I mean, you could reveal deep dark secrets, possible world-changing revelations or the ingredients to secret sauce and no-one would bat an eyelid because it all sounds like someone with a cold, gurgling with cough medicine, whilst their head is stuck in a deep fat fryer.

Formed in Anno Satana back in 2004; Blaspherian tick all the right death metal clichés and then some. Sure, ‘Infernal Warriors of Death’ is heavy; it frankly bottoms-out on heavy sometimes. The bass seems to have been recorded almost without any production by four-stringer with sausages for fingers. It’s such a low, despondent, grinding hum that I’m almost sure only dogs can hear the changes in tempo. The guitar is also tuned outside of normal hearing, sometimes filtering through an audible level, as some nice progressive thrash is heard on ‘Sworn To Death and Evil. The drums sound as if they’ve been recorded outside in the parking lot without any mics, and the general production values seem to consist of a group of wasps pushing the buttons.

I at least thought there would be some variation, but it seems Blaspherian want to bore the listener to tears – now, I’m not the expert on black metal; but come on guys, it sounds like one big session track of fits and starts that you’ve cut up, tacked some suitably METAL names to then handed over, with the words “don’t fuck with this shit” written on it. So it has an attitude and that’s great, unfortunately the attitude seems to be “we sound terrible and no-one will ever, EVER enjoy this music” because it makes me want to stick my head in the oven or work in politics.
