Planet Loud caught up with Conditions after playing the second night of two sold out shows at the Brixton Academy, supporting Paramore and New Found Glory.
Planet Loud – First time in the UK, how have the shows been so far?
Conditions – We’ve loved the shows so far., never played in front of this many people before.
Planet Loud – How are you finding the UK, first time here?
Conditions – This is the first time any of us have been here. In the UK the kids have been beyond incredible! With opened arms so to speak..
Planet Loud – How have the crowds reacted to you, being an unknown band over here and not even on the tour posters?
Conditions – We are from left field, unsigned, off the radar completely, but they have been so nice. We’ve made a point to go out and meet as many people as we can in the lines and a side from the fact that we are selling our cds and stuff to try and get some sustenance! They’ve been so nice, hanging out, making friends and it shows when we play. There’s been a huge difference between the nights that we really hit the lines and don’t hit the lines.
Planet Loud – For anyone that might not of heard you, can you tell us a bit about the band?
Conditions – We all formed from different bands that played around the Richmond, Virginia area where we’re from and we’ve known each other for a few years. So we started this band about a year and two or three months ago.
Planet Loud – How would you describe your sound?
And we sound like Conditions.
Planet Loud – What are your main influences?
Conditions – We all love Thrice.
Planet Loud – Brandon, how did you move from a band like ‘Scarlet’ to creating a sound like this?
Conditions – I actually walked away from Scarlet and actually decided that I was going to try and give up music, I was really set, you know school, go that path and turn in to a cookie cutter human being. Of course that falls through, any body who says they are going to give up music it’s always a try and it’s always a huge failure because no matter what you’re still going to do music. So one day I was approached by a couple of friends, just asked me to sing in the band and I said of course, didn’t even have to think about it.
Planet Loud – A great opportunity for you to be on a tour like this, how did that come about?
Conditions – Right place right time, lucky couple of kids. Our bass player is the guitar tech for Paramore, so we did a short little US tour, it was actually cut very short, but we played Nashville Tennessee which is Paramore’s hometown and Riley our bass player got them to come out. They were there, looking at the front row centre while we were playing which was so unnerving but they liked it and one thing led to another, we were extended the invitation and we’d be crazy not to do it.
Planet Loud – Are you planning any mores on the back of this?
Conditions – Yeah, we’re trying to get some regional stuff together in March because Paramore will be off during that time so we’re trying to play around the East Coast in the US and then hit it hard when the Summer comes around, try and do as much touring as we can.
Planet Loud – Are these the biggest shows you’ve ever played?
Conditions – Yeah by far.
Planet Loud – So how was that the first time you walked out?
Conditions – We played an introduction every night and I literally had the shakes through that, seriously shaking! But after that was done and we saw the crowd and how cool they were being you know it just…It was a really cool feeling because as soon as we walk out on stage people may think that were techs or something and then as soon as we all pick up our instruments and I sit down on my drum throne the audience screams really loud and it was a really good feeling.
Planet Loud – What plans do you have for releasing an album or an EP?
Conditions – Our EP is done and just has to be packaged up, that’s going to be coming out at the end of February in the US. It will be available online from Itunes, Smartpunk, Interpunk, all that stuff. It won’t be released in the UK, but they will be able to order it online. Seeing as after these like 5 or 6 shows we probably have more fans in the UK than we do in the US so yeah.
Planet Loud – This tour is building a lot of momentum for you guys so what plans do you have for coming back?
Conditions – We’ve fallen in love with the country, everybody has been so amazing, we definitely want to come back as much as possible.
Planet Loud – You’re currently unsigned, are you in talks with any labels to release the EP?
Conditions – This EP we’re doing, we are putting it out all ourselves, we’ve paid for all the recordings, mastering, all that. So we are releasing it ourselves and we’ve talked to a couple of labels, not too much just some that have shown interest. Right now were just trying to hold off and sell as many records on our own as we can and were just take it from there as labels begin to show more interest.
Planet Loud – It seems like the cd has been recorded and produced by a great team, how was that process?
Conditions – Yeah it was a lot of fun, his name’s Paul Leavitt, he’s a really good guy, really laid back, worked with us really well. Not really sure how we found him, through myspace? Um…my friend Jason heard him and our manager had heard him so we contacted him and recorded with him. Through Paul we met another producer; Bryan Turnin who didn’t do any production work for us but has been almost like a guide, telling us what we need to be doing and that were too lazy and we need to work more. So he’s been a cool influence on us and a really nice guy. So having Paul and then Bryan around occasionally has definitely been a really good experience.
Planet Loud – Thanks for your time, anything else to add?
Conditions – I mean look at us, seriously, let’s be as cliché as possible and say follow your dreams, anything can happen because our feet are on the stage and were absolutely no one so anything can happen, anywhere, to anyone.
