Recently, Planet Loud caught up with Jonas from Emarosa to find out how Warped Tour went and what their plans are for the future..
Planet Loud – Thanks for your time, how’s things?
Emarosa – It’s been going very well, I think it’s exceeded all of our expectations for sure!
Planet Loud – Any standout moments or stories about tour goings on you’d like to share?
Emarosa – Boston was a stand out moment for sure, I remember loading on stage and there not being many kids out front, to looking up 5 minutes later and there be the biggest crowd we’ve played for on Warped tour thus far!
Planet Loud – What has been the best city to play in so far and why? Is there anywhere in particular your looking forward to going?
Emarosa – Boston again, but all the Texas dates were extremely sweet even though the weather wasn’t the best. I really can’t wait to get back to the West Coast!
Planet Loud – Who were you most looking forward to being on the bill with and have your expectations been fulfilled?
Emarosa – Personally I was very excited to be on the tour with Closure In Moscow! And we’re getting to share the stage with them which makes it easy to watch their set everyday. They’re amazing!
Planet Loud – How have the songs from your new album Emarosa gone done with the crowds?
Emarosa – It’s gotten consistently better as the tour has moved along. You can definitely tell that people now have their hands on the CD, and are starting to know the words and when to jump up and down haha.
Planet Loud – The tour is pretty extensive, how do you guys cope with being on the road for that long?
Emarosa – We’ve done nothing but tour and be around each other for the past two years, I think that’s given us the proper preparation for a tour of this length!
Planet Loud – What plans have you got post Warped Tour?
Emarosa – We are doing the AP fall tour with Bring Me The Horizon, August Burns Red, Polar Bear Club and This Is Hell in October to November, and I believe we’re trying to go back overseas before the year is over as well.
Planet Loud – Your new album was released at the end of last month, how has it been received so far by fan and critics?
Emarosa – The majority of the feedback has been great, we’ve managed to please older fans as well as bring in some new ones! We really couldn’t ask for more.
Planet Loud – The artwork is very interesting; did you guys have any hand in that? If so what is its significance to the rest of the album?
Emarosa – We left that to Glenn at Synapse design, who also did the artwork for our album Relativity. He’s extremely talented and has a great feel for what this band is going for!
Planet Loud – Can you talk us through your writing/creative process for the album?
Emarosa – We had a whole album written when we walked into the studio, and that album was very different from anything we’d ever done, not necessarily in a bad way, but Brian McTernan wasn’t feeling it. He then spent a couple of weeks getting us back on track and helped us write and re-write a whole new record. Which is what you’re listening to when you put in our self titled CD. It was extremely stressful, and it required long nights and total dedication from everybody. Luckily everyone was willing to put in the work.
Planet Loud – What was the environment like emotionally for recording the album, are you guys pretty laid back when it comes to laying down tracks, or does a little stress sometimes help motivation?
Emarosa – The writing and pre-production was the most stressful time I’ve ever had being in this band, but once it came to tracking it was more chilled out and went very smoothly.
Planet Loud – Where was it recorded and did this have any effect on its formation?
Emarosa – It was recorded at Salad Days studio in Baltimore, MD with Brian McTernan ( who has worked with Thrice and Circa Survive). It was a great place and just being able to write and rehearse 24/7 was absolutely amazing.
Planet Loud – In your press release statement for the album singer Jonny Craig is quoted as say the album is informed by “…pain, hurt, love, lust and everything I’ve gone through since our last album.” Without being to personal, can we ask how these experiences informed the writing of the new album?
Emarosa – You’d have to talk to Jonny as he writes most, if not all of the lyrics. I know he’s gone through a lot since the last record, but I don’t want to say something that he’d prefer for people not to know.
Planet Loud – How has the writing of Emarosa differed from the writing of you previous album Relativity?
Emarosa – The writing wasn’t really different. The difference came in pre-production! On the first one we spent a couple of days on pre-pro, this time we spent weeks! You can definitely tell in the final result I think!
Planet Loud – What’s next for Emarosa, do you have any plans or new songs laid down, or is it to earlier for that yet?
Emarosa – We have a bunch of extra tracks demo’d out that we didn’t put on the CD. Especially one that we all really wished had made it. Whether it’ll be released later as a b-side or make it on the next record I don’t know.
Planet Loud – Thanks very much, good luck with the rest of the tour and the new album!Emarosa – No problem, see you soon.
