Grinspoon
Six To Midnight
Zoom
Aussie hard rockers Grinspoon have been a regular on the Aussie circuit for many years now and their sixth album, Six To Midnight, offers up more of the same funky, punky hard rock that has kept them a firm favourite with Aussies all over the world which is possibly where the problem arises.
You see, outside the Australian population, mention the name Grinspoon and most rock fans would give you a blank stare. Mention the band to any Australian rock fan and watch their eyes light up. Now six albums in, it’s obvious that their tried and tested formula has kept them maintaining a survivable level of success but, sadly, as you start to listen to Six To Midnight, it’s hard to hear anything on here that will garner them worldwide success. Don’t get me wrong, the songs are fine, the music is okay but it all just doesn’t click. There isn’t that one magical song that sees this record step up a gear. Even the pop rock of Comeback just doesn’t scream mainsteram but its traditional rock feel does go some way to explaining why the band are still huge in their native nation.
Another problem is that, as the album progresses you get a mish-mash of genres from the melodic rock of Comeback, the almost Nickelback-esque Give You More, the grooving thumping Passenger, the QOTSA tinged Run and the scratch-laden funk of Run. It’s hard to pin point what Grinspoon are or, other than the Australia rock market, who they actually appeal to and, sadly, Six To Midnight does nothing to change that
