InMe
Phoenix (Best Of)
Graphite
The story of InMe has been one of misfortune, misconception, dismissal, and, despite what you might think, some truly impressive music – in our view at least. While it’s safe to say that the UK stalwarts have lost their chance to claim the prominence that seemed within their grasp around the time of first record ‘Overgrown Eden’, their discography shows a band increasingly less constrained by expectations, embellishing and developing their sound into the intriguing alt-metal cocktail that it is today.
Suffice to say, if you’ve followed the Essex band throughout their career, ‘Phoenix’… is a far from essential purchase. Tracing the band through their four full-length records, this ‘best of’ gives near-equal time to each, from the naive but exhilarating ‘Overgrown Eden’ material, such as ‘Underdose’ and ‘Crushed Like Fruit’, through the more considered ‘White Butterfly’, the technically adventurous ‘Daydream Anonymous’, to last year’s ‘Herald Moth’. The beauty of this collection is that, where InMe’s albums are rather hit and miss affairs, this keeps strictly to the standout tracks (aside from a couple of slightly odd picks, but you can’t have everything), while including a handful of new songs, which are worth a look for long time fans.
It could be argued that this is more relevant than the majority of so-called ‘best-ofs’ released these days, as InMe have often been overlooked since the initial hype died down… so while this may be a cash-in, it’s also a great jumping on point for those who have never gotten into the band, or don’t want to shell out for the albums . If you’ve got more than two of their records then maybe it’d make more sense to download the new tracks and grab the records you’ve missed instead. Nevertheless, this is a decent way to tide yourself over until the next record proper.
