So, how did Disturbia Clothing start up?
Disturbia began back in 2003 after I graduated from a fashion degree at the University of Northumbria.
What made you want to start a clothing company?
I have always loved graphic art, and was massively inspired by early nineties band merch. There was something really alluring and iconic about all those old band shirts. Looking back on it I think I wanted to design band merch, but set up Disturbia, as though it was the band!
Did any particular designer or artist inspire you and, if so, why?
Back then, artists like Jamie Reid, and Ed Ruscha definitely impacted on what I was doing. At that stage it was more about the slogan than the art.
You’ve had some pretty big name endorsements (The Prodigy etc), that must be rewarding?
Yes, it is very flattering.
So many clothing companies are popping up on Myspace each week. What do you think makes Disturbia different?
Well, firstly Id say our designs are second to none, and the quality of our shirts and prints are amazing, this coupled with our experience in the market sets us apart. Were not a Myspace clothing company, and would hate to be one. There is so much shit on there its unreal.
How would you describe your style?
The style of Disturbia is basically illustrated, subverted pop culture, mixed with a dark sense of humour, a quintessentially English DIY punk ethic, and a healthy dose of angst.
Who do you think makes a good fashion icon in rock?
Someone who is unique and stands apart, who doesnt give a fuck. Few and far between these days. In fact Im struggling to name even one. Kurt Cobain perhaps?
Who do you think needs a fashion makeover?
Erm, Im not really into makeovers. Ultimately each to their own.
Fashion over substance – is this a problem in the rock scene do you think? Are too many bands concerned about their hair style/t-shirt design ahead of their music?
Without doubt, theres a lot of style over substance out there. Its almost like 80s hair metal never happened. Its almost the same scene, only this time with hair straighteners! We dont do much work with bands, and this is the reason. There are a hordes of uniformly homogeneous bands out there, playing basically the same shit as each other, all sponsored by the same clothing companies, all looking similar. Its just boring.
What are your plans for Disturbia in 2010?
Total global domination of course! No, just lots more awesome shirts, some new jackets, hoodies, prints and accessories. Were also hoping to take Disturbia to some trade shows in Europe and the USA later in the year.
