Desolated

Can you introduce yourselves please?
We’re Desolated from Southampton, we play a mix of death metal and hardcore.

Can you give us a quick background to the band? When you formed, any CDs out?
We are currently getting ready to release our debut album “The Birth Of Corruption” in March which we are all really pleased with.

Why did you form a band?
Desolated was formed just because that’s kind of what we wanted to do – have fun and play shows. Really for the first year of playing we were quite different and it’s only since last March we really found our sound and actually progressed as band.

Which band or musicians have had the biggest impact on your life?
We all like such a different mix of music and really just are all influenced by different things. Now we are really into hardcore and death metal bands like Whitechapel and just bands like that really but growing up we all listened to the classics like Megadeth, Pantera and all the death metal stuff, we still love it now just choose to play something a little different.

Can you describe your sound to our readers?
Draw a line right between death metal and hardcore.

We go from blasts at 220bpm straight to 2steps we really try and make a unique sound but I really wouldn’t describe us as deathcore. Its’ just not, it’s something different.

Describe your live show to us..
We move…… a lot.

Tell us about your first gig together?
Oh god, it was at some dingy pub with about 15 people in supporting Malefice. I thought we played really well but since I’ve looked at the video and we were fucking shit. We all thought we were awesome because we used flying-V guitars. We were 16 and I don’t really think we knew what we were doing…. but our parents pretended to like it so we were happy.

Any funny gig stories you can tell us about?
There’s so many dodgy funny things that happened to us last time on tour. We played some place called Durham up near Newcastle. On the “flyer”, when i say “flyer” I mean chalkboard it said local acts Desolated – we’re from fucking Southampton that’s not local for shit! I remember Silent Screams (the band we were on tour with) went to soundcheck and there were 3 old dears there with big smiles on their faces who were expecting a young interpretation on Green Sleeves and Bony-M. Ozzi from Silent Screams hit the guitar and the smiles wiped straight from their faces, they left the pub almost in tears. No one came to the show there was a kid with a Drop Dead hoodie on and we asked him “what the scene was like there” and he replied “what scene?” – wearing a Drop Dead hoodie…… joke. Oh yeah and there were swastikas drawn in crayon – it was a lovely place.

What are your goals with the band?
Just to play to kids, get people diving, having fun at shows. If we get big, we get big but we always want to have fun and play as many shows as possible.

What do you think about the rock scene at the moment?
It’s okay… it’s not bad but people really need to keep going to local shows to keep the passion there otherwise it will die out!

What are your upcoming plans?
Touring, releasing album, touring, chilling, touring.

Which member of the band has the most annoying habit?
Rob…… he ruins stories with irrelevant questions.

If you had a question for any musician out there alive or dead, who would it be for and what would the question be?
Literally I would personally have too many…… but I would ask George Micheal what rock star weed is like as he smokes enough of it.

What advice would you give someone thinking of forming a band?
Be prepared to work.

Thanks for your time. Anything else to say, plug, complain about, promote?
I would just like to say that if you dig our tunes please come to a show, dance, sing along and just hang out!
