Surfaces

Can you introduce yourselves please?
Joe, I do vocals. Hey i’m Dave I play guitar. Steve, guitar. Ddave, bass. Simon, drums.

Can you give us a quick background to the band? When you formed, any CDs out?
(Dave) Yeah, we formed at the very end of 2008, wrote our first song (This Broken Black) pretty soon afterwards, but never had a full lineup until mid 2009. We also have one CD out at the moment of our old recordings that you can purchase on the MySpace (www.myspace.com/surfacesbanduk).

Why did you form a band?
(Dave) Well for me personally it was a chance to mix different styles of metal that I have grown to love over the years together! (Joe) We wanted to make an impact on the music scene in the UK, as smaller gigs for smaller bands seem to be less popular these days. We wanted to change this.

Which band or musicians have had the biggest impact on your life?
(Joe) ‘For The Fallen Dreams’. His vocal style is a massive inspiration.

(Steve) I quite like a mixture of different styles, but probably ‘Exodus’.

(Ddave) For me personally i’m going to say that everything metal I have listened to over the years has inspired me.

(Simon) To be honest I quite like my bridging gap towards metal, bands such as ‘Thrice’ and ‘Deftones’ made a huge impact on me.

(Dave) I’m gonna go with ‘At The Gates’, they really inspired me and helped me to become the guitarist I am today.

Can you describe your sound to our readers?
(Dave) We try and mix a lot of different sub-genres of metal together to create a unique sound. We have groovy breakdowns, polyrhythmic patterns while still being very melodic. People who like bands such as Lamb of God, Meshuggah, After the Burial etc, will probably enjoy us.

Describe your live show to us..
(Steve) Mental.

(Joe) Yeah! Pretty much!

Tell us about your first gig together?
(Dave) I was nervous as fuck.

(Steve) Me too, loads of people there with such high expectations!

(Ddave) I was shitting it, especially when our sample at the beginning fucked up!

(Joe) Loads of fun though! probably one of the best shows i’ve ever played!

(Simon) Without a doubt one of the best shows I’ve ever played, but I was SO nervous!

Any funny gig stories you can tell us about?
(Joe) Like when Dave missed a show because he had an operation on his cock?

(Dave) Nah, more like when you and Steve woke Ddave and Simon up because that girl wouldn’t finish you off.

(Joe) Damn.

What are your goals with the band?
(Simon) We all want this band to take off and hopefully be playing bigger shows throughout the year.

(Dave) I want to be playing Download, and break America one day! And I think I speak for everyone in the band when I say that!

(Steve) Writing more awesome songs for people to enjoy.

What do you think about the rock scene at the moment?
(Joe) I feel as if it has kinda gone downhill a bit at the moment for bands that are trying to break through, I do think that this year will change though.

(Ddave) I just don’t think that as many people are going to smaller gigs these days, people seem to mainly go to big gigs at bigger venues.

What are your upcoming plans?
(Dave) Well we have a split e.p release on Small Town Records coming up soon, an album release planned for sometime later this year… we have a lot of opportunities that have arisen for us this year that are looking to be very exciting! We also plan to push our live show to make even more of an impact on people than we did last year, and in all honesty just have an awesome year!

Which member of the band has the most annoying habit?
(Steve) Simon, with his insane snoring.

(Dave) Or maybe Joe being naked quite a bit?

If you had a question for any musician out there alive or dead, who would it be for and what would the question be?
(Dave) Hendrix. Is it really that big? Obviously I’m referring to his thumb.

(Steve) Beyonce. Would you marry me?

(Simon) Buddy Rich. Can you teach me how to play like you?

What advice would you give someone thinking of forming a band?
(Joe) Make sure you get along with everyone!

(Steve) And that you all have similar tastes in music!

(Dave) Have an awesome time doing it, and stick with it!

(Ddave) Record your songs at my studio! (http://www.myspace.com/tidalforceaudio)

(Simon) When you’re on tour, get up on time to eat a Mcdonalds breakfast, sorts you right out!

Thanks for your time. Anything else to say, plug, complain about, promote?
(Dave) No worries! Just to check out our MySpace again, www.myspace.com/surfacesbanduk, keep a look out for any shows we are playing near you!

(Steve) Plus we’ve a few tours to be announced soon – and a festival in Brighton we’ve just been confirmed for. Keep checking our myspace as more dates will be added soon!
