Kadavrik
N.O.A.H
Sonic Attack
If you like your European metal with a healthy dose of ambition, melody and epic scope, you’re going to love Kadavrik and their latest record ‘N.O.A.H.’ The third full-length from these Teutonic titans, this is an interesting release for many reasons, but primarily because of its wilful and surprisingly effective blending of sounds and styles: in an odd way, they’ve managed to create something that’s both extreme and accessible.
As a result of this singular approach, ‘N.O.A.H.’ does have its questionable moments – but on the whole, they’re outweighed by the impressive. Apparently a concept album about an interplanetary Noah’s Ark and the desire to leave a ruined, corrupt earth behind (fairly timely, then), this is one of those records where you can take or leave the theme as required. Fear not, because the band themselves evidently haven’t neglected the most important element – y’know, the music – in pulling together their narrative masterplan, and they could hardly be accused of being po-faced, considering that they boast the likes of Frank The Tank (Drums – yes, really) and Hateful Han Of Hate (Keys) among their number. While some of their experiments jar a little, the synths on ‘High Rollin’’ for example, there are some great moments, such as the filmic tumult of ‘Adiposit Obstipation’ and apocalypse-groove of ‘Rußgeschwärzt,’ which falls in the second, German-language half of the record.
While at their heart they are a essentially a good melodic death metal outfit, Kadavrik’s willingness to branch out a bit and stretch themselves, both musically and thematically, does a pretty good job of setting them apart in an unbelievably glutted scene. With some killer support slots already under their belts (a run alongside Napalm Death plus shows with Gorgoroth, Six Feet Under and a load more) they’re evidently on to a good thing, and we reckon that, given a little more time to weed out the elements that don’t quite work, they could produce something very special indeed.
