Sanguine
Sanguine
Self-Released
If an up and coming, relatively unheard of young British band told you that Joey Jordison of Slipknot had said that he really liked their band, to be honest, you’d probably still be laughing a week later. However, in the case of Exeter alt-metal bunch Sanguine, that really is the case, as the masked one was recently heard to describe their demo tracks as “sweet.. sounds to be a hit!”
Now, he’s not the only one to pick up on this quartet with Adrian Smith recently hauling Sanguine vocalist Tarin Kerrey in to guest on his solo album. So, that’s Slipknot AND Iron Maiden already on their Christmas card list, right. So, what are they doing that is getting the rock scene all hot under the collar? Well, one spin of their self-titled debut album and you’ll find an album that pulls you all over the place and leaves you seeing stars. While the mid-paced opener For Love lulls you into what could be a fairly steady listen, the Exeter mob step it up a gear on the appropriately named Anger Song and, for the first of many occasions on this album, you really do feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. From Tarin’s throat-cutting screaming to the weird Marilyn Mansonesque sections, Sanguine certainly do their hardest to smash your senses into a pulp. Clearly a star in the making, vocalist Kerrey has a voice that really grabs your attention. Brutal, sassy, wacky, soothing – Kerrey has the range to deliver whatever style suits the hard, edgy, eclectic sounds her bandmates are churning out and, like the music, never fails to hit the mark.
For years the Brit rock scene has been screaming out for a female rock singer who could become as iconic as Skunk Anansie vocalist Skin. It seems that, in Tarin Kerrey, we might have had one hiding away in the depths of Devon all along. Her slighty zany, powerful, slight oddball delivery is a match made in heaven for tracks like the brilliant In The Sky a track which epitomizes everything that makes listening to this album a truly unforgettable experience.
