Skin The Pig
(Manchester, England)
Still plodding along in spite of a distinct lack of recognition from the mainstream metal elite, Skin The Pig – now in their 12th year – are proof that there’s more to Manchester than Coronation Street and Bez. While ostensibly a metalcore outfit, there’s a tangible darkness to the band’s sound that ensures the clichés of the genre are left a mile behind them. The simple fact is that they’re as comfortable creating slow-burning serenity as they are unleashing blow after blow of densely-layered metal. Skin The Pig’s ability to seamlessly weave darkness and light into their songs has become something of a signature for the band, the result being their latest offering, Article XIX. A combination of Soilwork’s songwriting know-how, Fear Factory’s punchy immediacy and the brooding atmospherics of My Dying Bride, one can only hope this sextet’s years of persistence won’t be in vain.
