Story Of The Year
The Relentless Garage, London
28 April 2010
Tonight”s gig is a reschedule from the beginning of the year (cancelled due to the dreaded “unforeseen circumstances” line), and it”s good to see that although not packed, the venue is nicely full, and the band are still well remembered to a decent number of people.
This City are a good band trying hard to sway the masses, however seem a little static on stage. Their funky rock is clever, though unfortunately doesn”t manage to capture the imagination crowd a great deal and becomes a little boring a handful of songs in.
The gig was originally in aid of promoting recently-released album “The Constant”; the band are keen to show off their newest creation and thus the set is heavy with newer songs. Lead singer Dan Marsala plays with the crowd well, enjoying their rabid response and encouraging them to go apeshit at any opportunity. It is the older tracks such as “Anthem of Our Dying Day” that quickly and easily whip bodies into a small mosh pit at any available opportunity. The fans lap it up, clearly elated to have the band back on our shores once again, and in turn incites a fun atmosphere and produces an awesome energy which can be so easily lost. It is almost a nostalgia trip back to earlier this decade when Story of the Year were at the peak of their fame – there may be fewer bodies flying around the pit these days but that hasn”t put anyone off tonight.
The set is concluded with the band”s biggest and best song, “Until The Day I Die” erupting into a massive joyous sing along from front to back, which hopefully has shown the band that our fair shores are still worth touring.
