Planet Loud interviews… The Boy Will Drown

Ahead of the release of their debut album, Fetish, Planet Loud spoke to rising Brit noise merchants The Boy Will Drown to find out if life on the road was really a life of sex, drugs and hardcore porn.

Planet Loud – So guys, how’s it going?
The Boy Will Drown – It’s going just about ok.

Planet Loud – You’ve got the new album coming out shortly, care to plug it?
The Boy Will Drown – The new album is out as of the 18th of May. You should be able to pick it up from any record shop. If it isn’t, get them to order it in.

Planet Loud – What did you want to achieve with it?
The Boy Will Drown – There wasn’t really any goal with this album. It’s a collection of songs we’ve written over the years and the newer tunes were purpose written to fit in with the older stuff, although the whole album has some new touches and tweaks.

Planet Loud – What was the recording process like? Any good stories you can tell us?
The Boy Will Drown – It was long, hard, kinda boring to be honest, but we defiantly learnt a lot from the experience. As far as stories, two guys tried to mug us, that was pretty shit.

Planet Loud – What inspired the title?
The Boy Will Drown – Originally the album was going to be called moustache, just because its a nice looking word. But after a while we decided against it. It ended up being called fetish because of the working titles at the time.

Planet Loud – Interesting song titles as well – Deep Throat, Josef Fritzel, Dance Like An Epileptic… what inspired them?
The Boy Will Drown – Deep Throat and Epileptic used to be long stupid titles and we just cut them down and the Fritzl songs were titled because that’s what the songs are about. We we’re looking for inspiration for the newer tracks and instead of writing about eating babies we wrote about issues that annoyed or disgusted us. The Fritzl case is really made us think about the things people are capable of, there defiantly not positive songs.

Planet Loud – Reckon you’re going to get any problems with people not wanting to stock the album?
The Boy Will Drown – I shouldn’t think people will be worried about stocking the album for the content. When people get the album and read the lyrics they’ll see that what we are writing about isn’t anything but fact. If people want to assume the worst and think that we have dedicated our efforts in trying to get a reaction out of others misfortunes then that ignorant.

Planet Loud – Okay, what can British extreme metal fans expect from the album?
The Boy Will Drown – Something fast, technical and slightly different.

Planet Loud – Who do you think the album will appeal to?
The Boy Will Drown – To be honest I really wouldn’t know. I hope people who enjoy music and can see the effort and time in putting these songs together. If people are looking for simple structures and easy listening then i wouldn’t recommend it.

Planet Loud – Do you remember your first exposure to extreme music? Which band or album was it that really made an impact on you?
The Boy Will Drown – I don’t know about extreme metal, I guess Cannibal Corpse was the first one for most of us.

Planet Loud – So, with the album title Fetish and song titles like Deep Throat – are you all sexual deviants?
The Boy Will Drown – Not all of us. And I don’t know if deviant is the right word but I’m sure everyone wants something slight avant-garde in their sex life.

Planet Loud – Hardcore Extreme Porn – should there be more control on what goes on the web?
The Boy Will Drown – I personally don’t think so. As long as is consensual, it’s a job for some people and I don’t think take material of bald girls in PVC with machines up their asses is anything worth worrying about. If that’s how they want to make their money let them, there a far more serious problems to be worrying about.

Planet Loud – So, is life on the road with The Boy Will Drown a frenzy of sex, drugs and hardcore porn?
The Boy Will Drown – Definitely 100% not. We’re pretty quite. We turn up do our bit chat to anyone who wants to chat then go to sleep. That’s it.

Planet Loud – Onto a different subject then, what are your plans once the album has been released?
The Boy Will Drown – We want to tour the hell out of this album then concentrate on the new stuff. We are all really excited about the new stuff as its more up to speed with the music that we listen to now.

Planet Loud – There are a few good British extreme metal album coming out at the moment, would you agree the scene is pretty healthy?
The Boy Will Drown – There are scene’s about that we think have some awesome bands in and a lot of good music is being made at the moment.

Planet Loud – What about upcoming bands, heard any good ones?
The Boy Will Drown – Our friends in The Temptress who we are going on tour with in august. There a really good band, we can’t wait to tour with them.

Planet Loud – What are your plans for the future..
The Boy Will Drown – We want to write more challenging music and try make it sound as different as possible. I think for this next album we have a much better understanding of what we want to do.

Planet Loud – Anything else to say?
The Boy Will Drown – Buy the album and come see us play live.
