Beggars
Vagrant Records
Thrice have been releasing albums since 1998 and each album has been different and exceeded its predecessor in musical creativity and this album is no different. Thrice’s newest effort “Beggars” is another emotional and lush record from the quartet which delivers melodic guitar work from guitarist Teppei Teranishi and lead singer/guitarist Dustin Kensrue.
The album has a brilliant jazzy feel whilst sticking to the that trademark Thrice sound. Album opener “All The World Is Mad” starts the show with an upbeat driving bass line complimented by a jazz like drum beat which does not fail to impress. Then the guitars come in with a bluesy minor chord which you would not expect. The album has its quieter moments reminiscent of the Air CD from The Alchemy Index Vol III & IV with tracks such as “Circles” which shows off their song writing capabilities. The album is evenly balanced with upbeat songs such as “At The Last” which has an intro that Pearl Jam would be jealous of, and mellow relaxed songs like “The Great Exchange” that will keep you calm and peaceful even on a bus full off people during rush hour traffic. But the stand out track to look for is “Talking Through Glass/We Move Like Swing Sets” which combines both elements of the CD and sticks them together to create four and a half minutes of unadulterated fun.
A very good effort which will leave you itching to see what other tricks they pull out of that infinite bag of ideas they have.
