Trigger The Bloodshed
Degenerate
Rising Records
Don’t ask me why but I really wanted to hate this album. Maybe there’s some gratification to be had in knowing you’re taking the poster boys of modern death metal down a peg or two, and once the intro was over and A Vision Showing Nothing started to blast through my speakers I couldn’t help but grin. Yes! Degenerate, the difficult third album, was going to be as generic as I’d hoped, it would be the album that would stop the constant arse kissing that these boys have been on the receiving end of.
No such luck. After the first track they really pick up their game, proving once and for all that Trigger the Bloodshed are not a deathcore band. Instead Degenerate is a powerful death metal beast. Incorporating guitar solos that cut through the sound like a machete through butter while the triggered drums keep a pace that is sure to exhaust circle pit enthusiasts. Jonny Burgan’s guttural roar can’t fail to impress, sounding like he’s ready to kill anything that gets in his way.
This album is a furious whirlwind from start to finish, drawing together classic and modern influences to create something truly devastating, with a production that complements the brutality perfectly.
It’s incredible to think that these five boys have improved so much since The Great Depression, released only last year and yet the song writing has matured so much, making Trigger look like veterans. Technical, without losing their edge, each song changes from the last leaving a rich and varied album that actually stands out from the pack, a rarity considering the state of extreme metal today. If they can keep this kind of momentum up then we could be looking at the UK’s Dying Fetus, expectations are high for the next album boys.
