INTRODUCING INTERVIEW![]() Can you introduce yourselves please? Hi, we are Cars On Fire from Bristol. Ali Ross - Vocals/Guitar, Mike Fell - Guitar/Vocals, Steve Gregory - Bass, Jon Pick - Drums Can you give us a quick background to the band? When you formed, any CDs out? I (Ali) have known Steve and mike for years, we all grew up in the same town and have played in various bands together over the years. Cars ON Fire was formed in 2006 when Mike and I decided to start a new band, we found Jon through mutual friends and started writing material straight away. Steve joined us in 2008, he had been playing in another band but things were quiet on that front. Once the four of us were rehearsing together things Just seemed to fall into place as we are all really good friends, and we all share a mutual love for the same type's of music. Our mini-album 'Dig Your Own Grave' comes out on 12th of October 2009 on Undergroove records. Why did you form a band? Not being in a band would be mental! We have all been in bands since we were little, it’s always been a huge part of our lives. We all thrive on writing music that we like to play & listen to, and there is nothing better than getting out there and letting other people hear your stuff in a live environment. We are very much a live band so playing shows is where it’s at for us, we just love to go crazy and have a lot of fun on stage. Which band or musicians have had the biggest impact on your life? Mine would have to be Kerbdog, Pantera, and Jeff Buckley. I grew up listening to these bands a lot, it’s shaped me as a musician. Can you describe your sound to our readers? I guess its punky hardcore but fused with metal & rock?! Something like that! Its got riffs, melody, singing, screaming and break downs....does that help?! Describe your live show to us.. FUCKING MENTAL!! Ha, it’s a mass of raw energy and sweaty goodness!! Lots of movement and excitement. WE LOVE IT! We talk to people after our shows and they always say good things, I don’t know if they are just being nice? Either that or they are like ‘They are mental, don’t upset them’! Haha, we always get people telling us they liked it so I guess that’s what we had set out to achieve! Tell us about your first gig together? It was at a small pub venue in Bristol called 'The Horse shoe', a really cool place. It had an awesome sound and it was a really good first show for us, everyone really seemed to like us and it was a nice introduction into the live circuit as a new band. I think it went pretty smooth too! Any funny gig stories you can tell us about? Oh hell yeah, a few weeks ago I lost it so much on stage that I completely went ass over tit backwards whilst playing one of our tunes! It was hilarious; I managed to pull it off as a move.... I think... And then just the other day we were playing a show in Glastonbury, I was in the middle of throwing my guitar around and I managed to nearly knock myself out with my guitar whilst throwing it around! I had a very painful lump on my head for days after! Luckily I was not seriously injured. What are your goals with the band? Well, at the moment the priority is to get the mini-album & video out. It’s all going really well and it’s already had a couple of pre-release reviews, which were really good. We have already started writing for the second album, and we are rehearsing all the time. I guess that the first half of 2010 will be taken up with plenty of live UK shows... I would say that our aim is to reach as many people as possible and just play as much as we can, that’s what we enjoy. It would be great to be able to earn enough money to concentrate on the band full time, sadly.... that’s not the case at the moment! What do you think about the rock scene at the moment? I am proud to be in a British rock band! There are sooooo many good British bands emerging at the moment, I think it’s a really exciting time for the UK rock scene. Its not all what it used to be, CD sales are down and the internet has become over saturated, so bands aren’t making the money they used to... But its still really exciting, bands are learning that the only real way to make money at the moment is on the road....so there’s loads of amazing shows to go to at the moment! What are your upcoming plans? Get the album & video out, play loads of shows and have a good time! Which member of the band has the most annoying habit? Haha, I think we all annoy each other equally! Like at rehearsal, if someone is trying to speak, you can guarantee that one of the band will be tinkering away on an instrument so that you cant actually talk.... that’s really frustrating but we are all guilty of it! Other than that, I have a knack for doing the most disgusting farts known to man.... and when I have to do them...I have to do them if you know what I mean! The guys hate it, sometimes they very nearly throw up! I think I may actually have a dead person in my stomach! If you had a question for any musician out there alive or dead, who would it be for and what would the question be? Oooooh, now there’s a question. I would ask Jeff Buckley not to go swimming in that fucking river!!! Such a tragic loss. What advice would you give someone thinking of forming a band? Find the right people to be in it!! It’s absolutely paramount that you are all on the same page, the last thing you want is band arguments all the time. It pays to be friends with the people in your band! Id also say, be prepared to put in a lot of time/energy & money at the early stages if you are going to take it seriously. I personally never even thought about PR, Merch, Video's, decent recordings, artwork, travel expenses etc etc at the early stages... I just thought it was as simple as writing the music and playing it, and it aint!! It can be very costly, but don’t let it put you off, you should enjoy every minute of it.... otherwise you need to ask yourself why you are doing it! Thanks for your time. Anything else to say, plug, complain about, promote? Thank you, our mini-album 'Dig Your Own Grave' is out in Undergroove records on 12/10/2009, go and buy it!
