Interview with Kill Casino Reviewer Graham Finney | VIEW COMMENTS [0 Comments] | ADD COMMENTS

Can you introduce yourself please?
I'm Karen Luan and I'm the singer/bassist of Kill Casino, a heavy rock three-piece from London town.

Can you give us a quick background to the band? When you formed, any CDs out?
We met in London and what started out as mucking around with guitars in my flat eventually turned into Kill Casino via gigging in a lot of dodgy pubs to nobody. Now we've two releases out in the shops and we've been fortunate enough to tour with some great bands and play some amazing venues.

Why did you form a band?
I was really into my music at school but was way too shy to get in front of an audience. And then when I moved to London, I found my feet a bit more, started feeling more comfortable in my own skin and thought now is the time to give this a shot but it happened very slowly, I met a lot of really strange individuals before finding Chris and Paul. I remember one guy stood up in a crowded pub and showed me his bullet scar where he'd been shot as a teenager in the ribs. He was pretty weird and I remember thinking... oh fuck this guy's got my telephone number...

Which band or musicians have had the biggest impact on your life?
Everything from the Ronettes to Rage Against the Machine. We're quite varied in what we listen to, there's always a bit of a fight about what we play in the van.

Can you describe your sound to our readers?
I suppose we're kind of female-fronted heavy rock, bit alt, bit punky - make of us what you will! We seem to tour with a lot of 'punk' bands like Against Me! and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes but we really divide opinion in that scene as to whether we're 'punk' or not. I gave up caring about that a while back. As far as I'm concerned, the shows were amazing and fitted us really well.

Describe your live show to us..
Chaotic! When you're a three piece, you're really conscious of filling the stage because you don’t necessarily have the presence of five people with guitars so we just enjoy ourselves as much as we can and try not to pick up too many injuries!

Tell us about your first gig together?
Our first gig with Paul was our launch party for the first album, 'I've Been to London to See the Queen.' Chris came down with really bad tonsillitis and I’ve never seen him that sick, I was really unsure he was going to make it onstage, he was sitting in a corner sweating and shaking and I have no idea how he managed to get through it! The show was really fun and we were all on a real high and then Paul got mugged and hospitalised on the way home which was fucking awful.

Any funny gig stories you can tell us about?
So many! Recently we played KoKo in Camden which is a big venue for us. The show had been great and then when Chris went to pick up the van, it had disappeared so we had to call the council and the police and report it stolen. It wasn’t even our van, we'd hired it, so we were freaking out about it being lost and how much it was going to cost. Anyway a friend came to rescue us in his van and it was only as they were driving by that they noticed our van. It hadn’t been stolen at all - we'd just forgotten where we'd parked it! We felt soooo embarrassed!

What are your goals with the band?
We'd like to get out to Europe and the US and that's starting to look like it might happen which would be really great. Then onwards with the next full album.

What do you think about the rock scene at the moment?
I think it's positive that small bands like us are getting distro deals and getting music on to the high street. I think it's encouraging that you can DIY with your own label but you really have to have a good plan of what you're doing. Musically there is some great stuff out there but it's getting noticed without a six figure marketing budget behind you that's the tricky bit.

What are your upcoming plans?
We're doing some UK dates - they're being finalised now. Our London show will be the Camden Barfly on Oct 18th and then hopefully out to Germany before the end of the year. It's great to see the mini album - Paper Walls and the Voice Downstairs out on the shelves so now we need to tour to support the record and meet new people - we've been off the road recording far too long!

Which member of the band has the most annoying habit?
I'm always late which drives Chris and Paul crazy. I even keep my phone ten minutes ahead to try to scare me into being on time but I always get lost or stuck or fall down some worm hole because no matter what I do, I always seem to be running late.

What advice would you give someone thinking of forming a band?
Do it! I've had some amazing times and memories that will last a life time. I regret not getting into it sooner. Be prepared for mega highs and mega lows; don’t sign anything, at all, ever without a lawyer checking it over for you.

Thanks for your time. Anything else to say, plug, complain about, promote?
The new mini-album! Paper Walls and the Voice Downstairs out now in HMV stores, independents and online at iTunes and all good digital music providers!
