INTRODUCING INTERVIEW![]() Can you introduce yourselves please? I’m Greg Chivers, guitarist and vocalist from the progressive metal outfit Fornost Arnor. Can you give us a quick background to the band? When you formed, any CDs out? The band was formed in 2008. We have just released our debut album ”Escaping The Abyss”. Why did you form a band? To be honest I’m pretty useless at most things in life. I was pretty rubbish at school and what not so I took up guitar. Somehow I found out I had knack to writing complicated metal songs. Thought it would be a good idea to start a band. Which band or musicians have had the biggest impact on your life? I’ve been through many different musical genres. I learnt guitar playing along to Radiohead’s ‘OK Computer’ in the late 90s. Their music got me through some very rubbish times. In metal I was originally into Cradle of Filth, Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, bands like that. As I’ve got older and stopped throwing myself around in silly mosh pits, I have moved into progressive music like Opeth, Secrets of The Moon, King Crimson and Borknagar. These have all contributed; there is no one single band. Can you describe your sound to our readers? It’s pretty Avant Garde. It has elements of black metal, big progressive chapters, acoustic guitars, harsh vocals and clean vocals. We have been likened to such bands as Opeth and Enslaved. Describe your live show to us. We are pretty standard. The music doesn’t call for over the top performances. I entertain using my wit. Tell us about your first gig together? We played in Leicester, pretty small place. We went down ok. Haven’t got any plans to play there again though. Any funny gig stories you can tell us about? We played in Wolverhampton, I got really drunk which isn’t much of a surprise to be honest. I managed to be sick out of the window most of the way down the M6, only problem was it was all getting blown onto the back seat. It wasn’t found till the next day. That’s not that funny really, maybe it is who knows, you decide. What are your goals with the band? I want the band to be as big as it possibly can. We are putting a lot of hard work into promoting the album and getting our name about. If we were ever to play the main stage at Wacken Festival or something along those lines, that’s the level we are aiming for. What do you think about the metal scene at the moment? I think there are a lot of exceptional musicians out there. The technical ability of these guys is outstanding, however I don’t see a lot of imagination in their musical arrangements. I’m pretty bored of a lot of it to be honest. There are some good bands still doing good things, like Marduk and Secrets of the Moon. Also new bands like Imperial Vengeance and Korvus are doing something new. What are your upcoming plans? I’m already writing the follow up album, I’m always writing music so I’m concentrating on that at the moment. If I’m not writing I’m promoting the album. Getting us heard. I think the future holds a lot for us so we will be looking to have the live performance up and running again in the next few months. Which member of the band has the most annoying habit? I can only comment on myself really. The others are very professional in their behaviour. I’m just a massive clown. I have no serious input once I have finish recording my parts. I laugh when they are recording vocals so they have to do loads of re-takes. I don’t know if it’s really a habit but it must be as I’m constantly doing it. If you had a question for any musician out there alive or dead, who would it be for and what would the question be? I have two. First would be to whoever came up with the idea of White Metal. Why did you do it and what are you trying to prove? The second, I would like to ask Abbath from Immortal round for a good old cup of English tea. I’m sure he would accept. What advice would you give someone thinking of forming a band? To be something new. Don’t just jump on the bandwagon for what the in thing is at the time. Make sure you have members who are willing to put there all in. There are too many people who are just a waste of time in this world. Thanks for your time. Anything else to say, plug, complain about, promote? Album is available through the Witch-King Records Online Store: http://witchkingrecords.bigcartel.com and it’s also available on iTunes and other digital distributors.
