IN THE PIT VIEW COMMENTS [0 Comments] | ADD COMMENTS | Monster Magnet Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton 11 December 2009 On December 11th 2009, the Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall had its floor laced with music fans from every corner of the rock and roll scene. As Dave, Jim, Bob and Ed took to the stage with an egotistical swagger, the fans bled together in anticipation for an unforgettable performance by Monster Magnet. From the moment the band claimed the spotlight, there was a fluid relationship between Dave’s edgy, yet somewhat sensual vocals, and the guitars and drums which blended together to form such hits as ‘Space Lord’ and ‘Powertrip.’ As Dave let out a trademark demonic laugh that rippled through the air, a hungry look sprung to the eyes of the fans who were already worshipping every note they performed. As the set pummelled through the venue with a delicious mix of echoed guitar solos and glamorously indulgent lyrics, it is fair to say that the rock quartet certainly knew how to take control of their talents and the fans that were desperate to see them exercised in the flesh. The speakers never stopped rumbling and the fans never stopped throwing their bodies through the riffs of songs such as ‘Unbroken,’ that kept feeding the room with energy. As Dave concluded that ‘this is what we ask for,’ [from the crowd] a slick of blood-red lights simmered around the crowd as the vocals developed an even grittier and powerful air. Even though some of the guitar solo’s became repetitive in parts of the set, they fitted with the intentions of their music rather than appearing as time-fillers when they ran out of things to impress their fans with. After all, it’s not like they needed to ‘try’ and impress anyone with their effortless performance. Regardless of their obvious ego, the audience embraced Monster Magnet’s music and overall performance as genuine, serious fun. The respect they earned from the fans did nothing but grow and grow until it moulded with the energy from the stage, creating almost a glowing, psychedelic atmosphere. It’s no wonder why the boys from Monster Magnet were glad to introduce more dates to their tour following the same nature of receptions from other fans from across the pond. After nearly twenty years in the music business under their studded belts, it’s safe to say that Monster Magnet can be listed under ‘Legends’ rather than performers, especially if every venue they strive to conquer experiences such a festival of raw talent and liquid musical delights that are just waiting to be lapped up.
