IN THE PIT VIEW COMMENTS [0 Comments] | ADD COMMENTS | Desolated The Queen's Head, Redditch 04 January 2010 Tonight the focus is most defiantly on deathcore, but the first brutal breakdown hasn’t even sent the skinny jeaned crowd hardcore dancing across the floor and we’ve lost the headliner. Yes, With Chaos in Her Wake have dropped out after only night on the tour. Not that anyone’s worried as Desolated prove themselves worthy of the headline slot with a crushing set that has everyone two-stepping and fist pumping to every slowed down breakdown thrown at them. It’s just a shame that the vocals are lost in the mix adding to the list of sound problems there’s been tonight. Not that any of these problems are close to the catastrophic performance from openers Half of Eternity. After the first song it’s clear something is wrong with the lead guitar which is silent, no matter how much the band mess with it. Nevertheless they soldier on until the end, even past a disastrous cover of Killswitch Engage’s My Curse, which would be fine if they weren’t peddling generic tripe. Equally boring deathcore boys The Odessa Massacre play a short set, made even worse by the fact that the drums are so loud they bury everything else. So it’s a good job that we have This Legion on in between to liven things up. Clearly one of the favourites on the bill they play a confident, brutally heavy set that has the crowd shouting along; forget the fact that there’s nothing new here because when it’s played with this much flair it’s hard to care. With a new E.P. out on the 15th it’s not hard to see big things happening for these guys. This is only their second show but Vidina are third from the top spot and it’s not hard to see why. The entertaining stage presence and the fact that have some excellent material behind them make this a tight and brutal set that really gets the crowd moving. However, yet again this is another excellent set tarnished by the sub-par sound which lays too much feedback on the impressive vocal performance of Louis-Anton making him inaudible when he talks to the crowd. You’d imagine that suddenly been made headliners would put enough pressure on a band, let alone following a performance as powerful as Vidina’s but Desolated take it in their stride. While clearly taking more influence from death metal, they keep it hardcore enough to please every member of the audience who ever stretched their earlobe and flailed their arms. More importantly their as enthusiastic as the crowd and keep everyone pumped till the very last exhausting second.
