IN THE PIT VIEW COMMENTS [0 Comments] | ADD COMMENTS | Rammstein Wembley Arena, London 04 February 2010 The thing people always talk about with Rammstein gigs is not how well they played or how good the music was, but the pyrotechnics: and now I know why. My god, they are just jaw-dropping, a fantastical display to warm even the most jaded pyromaniacal heart; and tonight's display, being indoors, isn't even the full works – just wait until Sonisphere, where they'll be bringing 20 tonnes of the stuff! I think they call that bang for your buck... The Wembley stage has been transformed into a metallic playground, with flamethrowers and launchers secreted in every corner whilst machinery descends from the ceiling; never have I seen a crew work so hard during a set, clearing up debris from fallen walls in opener 'Rammlied' and exploding dolls at the end of 'Wiener Blut' as well as ferrying around torch-masks and paraffin canisters for an explosive version of 'Feuer Frei!'. There's more than a hint of Kraftwerk hidden within Rammstein's music, almost as if the electronic maestros have once again found guitars (yes, Kraftwerk did once have them), albeit a touch heavier; the pulsating motorik rhythms and harsh repetitive vocals that are the backbone of the Rammstein sound call to mind their illustrious forbearers vividly, whilst Flake's keyboards echoes Kraftwerk's latter output on many an occasion. The most impressive moments are left for the finale; jets of flame from above and below surround the band for the set highlight of 'Sonne' at the beginning of the encores, whilst Till's gigantic flaming angel wings wins the award for most over-the-top gimmick in a live set as Rammstein finish off an exhilarating evening with an epic 'Engel'. For once it's not the music that’s left my ears ringing, but the mass of wonderful explosions that has left me partial deaf – and I want more!
