When you’re in a relatively new sludge-metal band, being affiliated with Crowbar’s Kirk Windstein is never a band thing. California’s answer to the bastard son of Pantera are currently on tour in the US with their mentor, supporting their debut release ‘Defeat’. Armed for Apocalypse mixes metal-core, speed-metal and sludge-metal with dribbles of doom – a rip-roaring combination. Whilst ‘Defeat’ makes for an interesting listen, the constant change of pace and tempo can become tedious and the brimming confidence of the record appears a tad over-indulgent at times. However, the album is laden with springy Southern-rock inspired riffage and set against a delightfully atmospheric stoner-doom back-drop. ‘Defeat’ showcases a vast amount of potential from the band and just as Corrosion of Conformity, Down and Eyehategod (etc) paved the way before them, Armed for Apocalypse are nearly ready to fly the flag for the sub-genre mash up and continue the legacy created by some of the greats of the Deep South.
