RECORD REVIEW DelainApril Rain (Roadrunner) VIEW COMMENTS [0 Comments] | ADD COMMENTS After hearing the Dommin album, could these ears take another dose of atmospheric goth-tinged rock? Well, thankfully this listener bit the bullet and stuck on April Rain, the new album from Dutch outfit Delain, a Euro Goth-rock outfit started up by ex-Within Temptation ivory-tinkler Martjin Westerholt. Pulling together a band that features members and ex-members of Euro-goth heavyweights like Nightwish and Lacrimosa, the icing on the cake is the appearance of ex-Theatre Of Tragedy vocalist Liv Ktistine who takes this band to a new level in terms of quality. April Rain is a soaring example of how to play Euro-goth rock without it sounding pompous or well, a bit shit. From the nailed-on production job to the absolutely massive arena-filling songs, this album is the absolute business. Of course if you’re a fan of Bring Me The Horizon then you’re probably going to avoid this like the plague but if you’ve got a thing for thumping euro-rock, melodic, operatic vocals and huge swathes of atmosphere then Delain will be right up your street. Okay, so it’s nothing groundbreaking in terms of the European goth-metal scene but there are very few bands, aside from the likes of Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation who can produce fist-thumpers like Virtue And Vice, songs that don’t step into the sort of pompous waters that puts many people off bands like Nightwish. Like Lacuna Coil, Delain peddle a hard-edged style that, while bordering on mainstream, is still atmospheric and heavy enough to keep them interesting to the underground scene. Of course, when you’ve got Liv Kristine fronting your band then the end product is always going to be something special and on this album she simply steps up to another level. Whether it is dreamy numbers like On The Other Side or thundering anthems like Go Away, Kristine delivers a note perfect, immense performance that will leave you in no doubt who the Queen of Euro-Goth rock is. It took Lacuna Coil a good decade to hit the mainstream metal crowd but, on the evidence of April Rain, it won’t take this lot half as long. - Rating [9] Release Date - 01 February 2010 Reviewed by Graham Finney Find more articles on Delain Find YouTube Videos on Delain Download April Rain here Related Tags USER COMMENTS - 0 Comments ADD COMMENT |
