Oh, Mr.Zombie, you don’t know how long we’ve been waiting for this album. After suffering Rob Zombie’s venture into the movie world resulting in, amongst others, the abysmal House Of A 1000 Corpses and the predictable follow-up The Devils Rejects, it really was about time that the ex-White Zombie frontman returned to what he does best, making thundering, astro-rock.

Almost eleven years has passed since Hellbilly Deluxe skidded onto the rock scene and, while the anticipation has not reached a level akin to that of Chinese Democracy, it’s clear that, after one spin of Hellbilly Deluxe 2, the wait has been worth it. Straight out of a comic-book, Hellbilly Deluxe slams straight into the anthemic Jesus Frankenstein, a wall of thumping beats that could only be the work of one man. Sick Bubblegum keeps up the relenting industrial-drive of this album while Werewolf, Baby has an almost bluesy undercurrent running beneath Zombies’ spooky B-grade horror movie lyrics. The unrelenting, pumping groove is broken up by Zombies love of creepy samples something fans of his previous offerings and his work in White Zombie will already be prepared for. Now, while it has been eleven years in the making, it’s not a perfect album with the likes of the turgid Cease To Exist definitely not upto the standard of other material on this album. Still, when Zombie hits his groove and he does that on more than one occasion, Hellbilly Deluxe 2 is more of a hit than a miss album.

So, of course, the next question revolves around live shows which, considering his eye for all things visual should be an absolute blast. With festival season around the corner here’s hoping for the return of the dreadlocked shock-rocker to UK stages as, despite it being an album of varying quality, the metal scene is a delightfully more hellish place with him in it. - Rating [7]
