It has been a tough few years for Through the Eyes of the Dead. The thought of having to replace three fifths of the band would be enough to send weaker willed bands to the morgue. Instead TTEOTD has come back swinging with new album Skepsis.

Starting with a disjointed and unnecessary intro the album quickly picks up pace, continuing to show off the band’s gradual move away from being just another deathcore band. First proper song Dementia sets a technical standard that the band are quite happy to show off using the crystal clear production this album is blessed with.
Each song is carefully crafted and despite the various line-up changes the band sound tight. New vocalist Danny Rodriguez quickly establishes himself as an excellent replacement, his roars taking you back to those classic death metal bands. While the guitar work happily runs the line between tech-death and deathcore, occasionally giving in to the guilty pleasure and cracking out the pinch harmonics.
Every time you think you know what direction a song is going to go in it switches, keeping the listener on their toes. Songs like The Manifest and Perpetual Defilement show the band taking deathcore into a mature stage, where the emphasis is on the songs, not on how many breakdowns you can fit into four minutes. Skepsis is almost too good, because when it finally does lose momentum it’s all the more disappointing. Slowing things down for a pointless instrumental (Insomnium) and then ending the album on the title track, a song that does everything right and yet somehow doesn’t manage to pull your attention back.

Despite this TTEOTD have pushed through their problems and pulled out a blinder. A technical death metal behemoth that can, and should, be enjoyed by classic death and deathcore fans alike. - Rating [8]
